Dr Seth M. Stadel Publishes New Translation of the Earliest Syriac Literary Catalogue

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is pleased to announce the publication of The Catalogue of Books of ‘Abdisho‘ bar Brikha: Translated with an Introduction and Notes by Dr Seth M. Stadel, British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oxford.

This volume presents the first modern annotated translation of ʿAbdishoʿ bar Brikha’s Catalogue of Books, the earliest history of Syriac literature. The translation, based on Yusuf Habbi’s 1986 edition, is accompanied by detailed annotations, an extended introduction, and the vocalized East Syriac text. It provides scholars with a vital resource for understanding the transmission of Syriac literary heritage and the history of Christianity in the late antique and medieval Middle East.

Dr Stadel, who completed his DPhil at Oxford in 2022, has also authored The Heirs of Theodore: Aḥob of Qatar and the Development of the East Syriac Exegetical Tradition (Brill, 2023). He is currently a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oxford.

The book can be accessed from the Brill website here.
