Graduate Study

Our Graduate Courses

The areas taught and studied in our Faculty represent well over half of the world's current population, as well as covering some of the world's major civilisations. Far from being marginalised; they are at the heart of the modern globalised world. Among subjects in the humanities, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is unique in introducing students to civilisations that are radically different from the Western ones that form the basis of the curriculum in most British schools and colleges.

Our courses include language, literature, history and culture, and there are a wide range of options in such fields as art and architecture, history, literature, philosophy, religion and modern social studies. The following are the principal areas of study:

  • East Asian studies
  • Hebrew, Jewish and Eastern Christian studies
  • Egyptology and the Ancient Near East
  • Inner and South Asia
  • The Islamic World
  • Modern Middle Eastern studies

We offer either one-year (MSt/MSc) or two-year (MPhil) taught master's courses across our subject areas. We also have a thriving doctoral programme, where research students work closely with academic staff across our subject groups.
