The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is delighted to celebrate Professor Dominic Parviz Brookshaw’s appearance on the BBC Radio 4 In Our Time podcast. In this episode, Professor Brookshaw joined host Melvyn Bragg to discuss the life, work, and enduring influence of the 12th-century Persian poet, Nizami Ganjavi.
Born in Ganja (modern-day Azerbaijan) around 1141, Nizami is celebrated as one of the greatest romantic poets in Persian literature. His Khamsa ("Quintet"), a set of five epic poems, includes timeless love stories such as Layla and Majnun and Khosrow and Shirin, as well as explorations of philosophy, astronomy, and the life of Alexander the Great.
